SAMIN Zambia Launches: A New Era for Migration Advocacy

SAMIN Zambia Launches: A New Chapter for Migration Advocacy

31 July 2025 marked a milestone for migration discourse in Zambia as the Southern African Migration Network (SAMIN) – Zambia Country Chapter held its inaugural meeting at the University of Zambia.

With 17 participants — including key representation from the Office of the Commissioner General — the gathering set the stage for a coordinated, action-driven approach to addressing migration and refugee issues in the country.

Why This Meeting Matters

Migration is a complex and often misunderstood issue in Zambia, where refugee communities face both systemic challenges and untapped opportunities. The inaugural SAMIN meeting was more than a ceremonial launch — it was a working session focused on solutions, partnerships, and impact.

Participants engaged in robust discussions on:

  • Raising awareness of refugee rights and realities.
  • Advocating for legal reforms to strengthen protection frameworks.
  • Defining SAMIN’s role in tackling Zambia’s most pressing migration challenges.

The Roadmap Forward

The meeting concluded with a three-point action plan to operationalize the network:

  1. Courtesy Call to the Commissioner General
    • Formal introductions to secure institutional support and facilitate approvals.
    • A letter has already been sent; a response is awaited.
  2. Field Visits to Refugee Camps
    • Direct engagement with refugee communities to assess needs and identify opportunities for collaboration.
  3. Documentary & Research Project
    • Showcasing positive refugee impact stories, including the inspiring journey of Mr. Claude, whose agricultural investments are transforming livelihoods.

The slight overrun was due to the urgent need to secure a venue at short notice — a necessary adjustment to ensure the meeting’s success.

Looking Ahead

The SAMIN Zambia Country Chapter is now poised to become a central voice in migration advocacy, bridging policy, research, and community engagement. With a clear roadmap and committed partners, the network aims to influence change that is both practical and transformative.

“We are confident that with collaborative efforts, we can achieve our objectives and create a meaningful impact,” said Cheswa Kapasa, SAMIN Representative for Zambia.
